Engineering Director
The Role
The Manager of Engineering & Design is a member of the Engineering Management Team and is responsible for the overall technical management and leadership of all the Engineering disciplines.
Main Responsibilities
- You shall manage an overall team inclusive of all Engineering disciplines, Process, Electrical Control and Instrumentation, Mechanical, Piping and Civil, Structural.
- You shall have between 10 and 20 direct reports including discipline engineering managers, your total team size shall include up to 150 indirect reports including subcontractors and client teams.
- You shall be responsible for all line management activities of your direct reports, inclusive of utilisation, holidays, expenses, performance reviews and time writing.
- You shall be accountable for all recruitment and resourcing supporting the discipline engineering managers where applicable.
- You shall be accountable for all proposals and estimates specifically single discipline, and where large multi discipline proposals are required, you are responsible for providing resources to complete.
- You shall be accountable for managing quality of Engineering and Design and ensure the team have the correct quantity and quality of personnel, with the requisite competencies, qualifications, skills, experience and training to undertake and execute their work scope.
- You shall be the main technical focal point for Engineering and ensure that the team have the support and advice they need to perform to the highest standards to deliver the business and project performance targets.
-Responsible for people development, succession planning and promotion within the team. Ensure that Employee Performance Reviews are completed at, as a minimum, the Optimum Engineering Solutions required frequency.
- Provide regular feedback to the team to support their development
Support the development and implementation of the Engineering business strategy.
- Deliver monthly Company Team Brief with other members of the Engineering Management Team
- You shall be responsible for reviewing, updating and implementing all the procedures, standards, guidance notes and forms for Engineering
- You are responsible for appointing and managing capable discipline checker and approvers
Key Requirements
It is desired you have a strong understanding of the full Engineering lifecycle from concept, through FEED, detailed design, manufacture and test, construction and commissioning, this role will require you to be involved in all aspects of the Engineering lifecycle
- You shall have a strong understanding of all the Engineering disciplines and how they function
- You have previously lead or managed a team of minimum 10 Engineers and Designers
- The Manager of Engineering is accountable for all resourcing of engineering projects.
Projects can be stand-alone engineering projects, or be the engineering scope of a Bilfinger EPCM / EPC project, and be for different sectors (Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Energy, Utilities, Chemicals, Food), small and large projects, and greenfield and brownfield.
- You shall be able to be client facing and build / maintain strong client relationships to support Engineering growth
The role requires travel to various clients, sites and businesses for the support of sales, projects, growth and collaboration
- You shall be able to lead and deliver engineering estimating and proposals inclusive of assumptions and exclusions
Experience & Qualifications

Required:
- BEng / MEng / BSc / MSc Degree in Engineering
- Experience as Engineering Project Manager in a multidiscipline Engineering / EPCM / EPC company in one of the above mentioned sectors in an engineering or consultancy company
Good knowledge of Engineering and Design disciplines (EC&I, Automation, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Piping and Process)
- Experience in managing and implementing strict quality control and procedures
- Experience developing and implementing an engineering quality plan / design management plan
Sound practical knowledge of and experience with various phases of engineering and construction projects – concept, FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning
- Experience and good understanding of working with the common standard forms of contract (EJCDC, FIDIC, etc.)
Demonstrable understanding of cross discipline and department interactions in an engineering contracting or consultancy company
- Working knowledge and good understanding of project controls, including schedule, cost, risk and change management
- Experience communicating to audiences at all levels, including Board Members. Excellent communication skills and the ability of demonstrate how communication differs depending on the audience
